Creamy lemon-garlic tahini sauce is so quick and easy to make, you can always have a batch in your refrigerator! Tahini sauce has a nutty flavor with a good hit of garlic and nice brightness from fresh lemon juice. This popular Middle Eastern condiment is naturally gluten-free and vegan, making it a good option for a variety of diets.

I tested this easy recipe thoroughly to find the right consistency, which is easy to adjust to your preference with more water! While this sauce is plenty flavorful, you can add herbs and spices to add even more flavor. I share lots of ideas in this post.

A reader, Kayla, says: “I made this sauce for meal prep and used it on a variety of proteins and veggies throughout the week. It was the perfect condiment to have on hand to make meals flavorful and easy!” ★★★★★

    Simple Ingredients For Tahini Sauce

    Ingredients for tahini sauce.

These are the main ingredients you need to make this easy tahini sauce. You can find the full list of ingredients and measurements in the recipe card below.

Tahini — the key ingredient! Tahini is a type of sesame paste commonly used in Middle Eastern recipes. Tahini is made with hulled, ground sesame seeds and sometimes lightly toasted. It has a lightly nutty and buttery flavor. Be sure to use sesame paste that is labeled as tahini. Other sesame pastes, like zhi ma jiang, are made from unhulled and deeply toasted sesame seeds that are very rich and have a much more toasty flavor. Zhi ma jiang is an Asian sesame paste that is more intense than Middle Eastern tahini.

Lemon juice — lemon juice brings acidity to the tahini sauce, which complements the nutty, buttery tahini very well. Use fresh lemon juice for the best results, as the bottled kind is not quite as robust.

Water — I use ¼ cup of water to loosen my sauce and get it to my desired consistency. Depending on your preferences and what you’re using it for (and the thickness of the brand of tahini you use), you may need more or less water. See the “Control The Consistency With Water” section of the FAQs below for more details.

Garlic — garlic adds so much flavor. Grate it to bring out as much of its flavor as possible, and to maintain a smooth sauce consistency. Using minced garlic is fine, but your sauce will not be completely smooth, and the garlic can settle at the bottom of the container.

    Flavor Variations

To make a twist on classic tahini sauce, try one of these variations:

    • Green Tahini Sauce: For a green tahini sauce that’s a riff on green goddess dressing, make this recipe in a blender, or in a tall jar, using an immersion blender. Add all ingredients to the blender canister or jar, plus ¾ cup mixed herbs such as parsley, mint, cilantro, dill, basil, and/or chives. Blend until smooth. Add an extra 1 to 2 teaspoons of water or lemon juice, if needed. Green tahini can be stored covered in the refrigerator for a week, though it is best eaten within 2 days (as the lemon juice can turn the herbs brown).
    • Spicy Tahini Sauce: Add harissa (paste or powder), Sriracha, or cayenne pepper to the tahini sauce to taste.
    • Golden Tahini Sauce: Add a pinch or two of turmeric powder or golden milk powder to color and flavor the tahini.

    Troubleshooting and FAQs

Why Did My Sauce Seize Up?

This is normal! The acid in the lemon juice can disrupt the fat molecules in the tahini, forcing them to clump together. When enough water is added, the emulsion will invert and turn smooth again. Just add water and continue to whisk until the sauce is smooth. The consistency corrects very quickly!

    Control The Consistency With Water.

Water is a necessary ingredient for a smooth tahini sauce, but you can add more or less depending on how thick you want it. For a thicker sauce that is great for enjoying as a dip, make the recipe as written. For a thinner sauce with a more drizzling consistency that you can use as a dressing, add more water 1 teaspoon at a time.

    Why is my sauce bitter?

The flavor of tahini can vary by brand. If your sauce tastes bitter, add a little sweetener to counteract it. Start with about ½ teaspoon of honey or maple syrup and whisk it in well. Taste before adding more. Keep in mind that the flavor of tahini sauce will intensify over time as it sits in the refrigerator, so be careful not to add too much sweetener.

Pro Tips For The Best Tahini Sauce

Mellow the garlic flavor by soaking it in lemon juice. To mellow out the garlic flavor, before whisking the sauce together, finely chop the garlic, then add it to the lemon juice to infuse for 10 minutes. If desired, you can strain out the garlic and discard it, then proceed with making the sauce with the garlic-infused lemon juice. I like to do this when I plan to hold the sauce for longer than 1 or 2 days and want it less garlic-forward, as the flavor of the garlic will continue to get stronger over time.

Tahini thickness can vary by brand. Tahini thickness can range from pourable to a thick tahini paste that has the same consistency as peanut butter. If your tahini paste is very thick, you will likely need a bit more than ¼ cup of water.

Stir the tahini before you measure it if it is separated in the jar. Tahini naturally separates as it sits. Thoroughly stir the oil back into the paste so the sauce has the proper consistency.

    How To Make Tahini Sauce

Below, I’ve highlighted portions of the recipe in simple steps with process images along with instructions for making this 5-minute tahini sauce. You can find the full set of instructions in the recipe card below.

Set of two images showing tahini sauce ingredients added to a glass bowl and whisked together.

    1. Add the tahini, lemon juice, water, grated garlic, and salt to a medium bowl.

    2. Begin whisking the ingredients together. It will seize up and clump together at the beginning—this is normal.

Set of two images showing the mixture whisked more until smooth, and seasoned with more salt.

    3. Continue whisking, and the mixture will turn smooth and silky. You can adjust the sauce’s consistency by adding more water, just 1 teaspoon at a time.

    4. To adjust the flavor of your tahini sauce, add a small splash more lemon juice and a pinch of salt.

    • Adjust the consistency of the sauce by adding more water as needed. Adjust the flavor by adding more lemon juice or salt.

    Notes

    • If the sauce is too tangy or sharp tasting, add an additional pinch of salt or a teaspoon of olive oil.
    • If the sauce is bitter tasting, add ½ teaspoon of maple syrup or honey.
    • If the sauce is too thick, add more water, a teaspoon at a time, until it has reached your desired consistency.
    • This recipe makes about 1¼ cups of tahini sauce (3 to 4 tablespoons per serving).

    How To Serve Tahini Sauce

Tahini sauce is such a versatile condiment! It makes a wonderful dip, salad dressing, and more. Here are some ideas for how to use it:

    • Dip: Thick tahini sauce is a delicious dip for fresh vegetables like cut carrots or broccoli, and crunchy pita chips. Pair it with hummus and tzatziki on a veggie tray or mezze platter.
    • Drizzle: Serve over roasted vegetables like roasted carrots and roasted delicata squash. The sauce’s nutty flavor with its lemony acidity plays incredibly well with sweet veggies.
    • Salad dressing: Make a thinner tahini dressing to drizzle over roasted vegetable salad, pasta salads, or grain bowls.
    • With falafel: Try tahini sauce alongside fluffy falafel or air fryer falafel. You can also make a stuffed pita with falafel, leafy greens, pickled red onions, and tahini sauce.
    • With proteins: I love spooning this flavorful sauce over chicken shawarma (another Middle Eastern classic!), air fryer chicken breast, or air fryer salmon to add a little flair.

    Storage Instructions

Storing: Place the tahini sauce in a jar or other airtight container and refrigerate for up to 1 week.

Freezing: Transfer tahini sauce to a freezer-safe container and freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator and give it a good whisk before serving.

Try one of these easy and delicious homemade condiments next!

Pickled red onions are tangy and crunchy, and only take 5 minutes of prep time! They are actually delicious paired with tahini sauce. Try them in a pita pocket with chicken or beef, veggies, and a good drizzle of sauce.

Rich and creamy ranch dressing is a versatile sauce that’s a breeze to make in the comfort of your own kitchen! Use it as a salad dressing, dipping sauce, or topping.

My easy Caesar dressing stands out because you don’t need raw eggs to make it! Whisk it together in a few minutes with olive oil, lemon juice, anchovies, and garlic.

You’ll ditch jarred pesto for good after trying my homemade basil pesto recipe. You can even freeze some for later.

Horseradish sauce is sharp and creamy, perfect alongside a juicy prime rib. You only need a few simple ingredients and very little time to make it.
